Opening the Alpha Gates

Posted on: August 1st, 2013 by T'nara the Wise

Well, alpha has been going a few weeks now, and we’ve observed something we hadn’t really anticipated. There are lots of mages coming and going, but they don’t run into each other very often. We see someone come in, run around, and leave, and then literally a minute later, someone else arrives. Or, someone is in the Mushroom Meadow and someone else is in Bluewood Grove, but they never end up in the same place at the same time. There are so many near misses! And it’s not stressing our servers as we expected.

So, we’ve decided to throw caution to the wind, and open up the alpha gates to any Windows user that wants in as a tester. That’s right! Your wait is over!

If You’ve Never Been In Mage Faire Before

Thus far, we have been letting alpha testers in by hand–very time consuming and tedious. We can’t go on this way. So we’re going to try a different way, using an eCommerce/download vendor. You can go here and “buy” the alpha client for $0.00. It won’t ask for your payment information, but you will need to enter your (real life) name and email. Then you can immediately download and install it.

The first time you log in, create your account by creating a mage name and supplying your email. On subsequent logins, be sure to just log in–only create an account once, please!

We’ll add you to the alpha forums by the next day (hopefully), and you’ll get an email with your alpha forums username and password.

If You Are Already an Alpha Tester

You need to update by “buying” this free client as well (here), in order to be compatible with our server update and everyone else. When the client asks if you have already logged in, answer yes, and then just log in the way you have been.

Yay! More Mages!

We are hoping that this will result in more alpha testers in one place at the same time than we have yet seen. We hope to push our servers harder with this. We’d appreciate it if you would try to arrange get-togethers with your friends, so there are more people in one place at one time. And if the server crashes, pat yourself on the back, because we need you to make it crash in order to debug it!

Would it be okay to try this running Windows in a PC emulator? It should be as if I am truly running Windows. I don’t want to mess up your system if this is not acceptable.

    • Orrick the Mighty says:

Yes. Give it a try and let us know how it goes.

I’d say it worked pretty darn well! I was running Windows 7 inside VMware Fusion and it was pretty seamless. If other Mac users have VMware I’d say give it a go.

Kudos devs, for throwing caution to the wind and opening Alpha! Initial impressions:

Downloading and installing the client was smooth, no prob. (Technical details: running XP pro on an older 2006 laptop with 1.86 ghz processor). Had some trouble logging in at first, kept getting the “cannot connect to server” message. Got in finally, and game seems to run fine on my “ancient” laptop. Movement tracking seemed a bit ragged; adjusting the mouse pointer sensitivity to a slower speed helped a bit.

Didn’t get all the way through the tutorial, cuz server kept crashing, but I guess that’s to be expected when you’re pushing the load limit, eh? Ran into a fellow Glitch, which was awesome…we chatted a bit before the server dumped us.

One thing I noticed was that even after the game window closed, something seemed to still be running on my computer, cuz my fan was blowing. Checked processes under task manager, and found that “setup.exe” was still running at high mem usage, so I ended that. Fan was still blowing, so I restarted my computer just to make sure everything was closed out…not sure if that’s a bug, or just my cranky laptop, but thought I’d mention it.

Bravo again, and best of luck…looking forward to exploring further!

    Beautiful World…..Beautiful…Beautiful…..Beautiful..

Well did actually get to chat briefly with three Mages…when I finally did notice they were saying Hi! lol
Between the chat box/texr not quite large enough for these ol’ eyes to see clear enough to reply, add in a bit dyslexia learnubg to work the movements via keyboard ..and trying to type a coherent response with minimum typoese….lol..Wow what a work-out! Thank you so much for some long awaited fun! Huzzah Huzzah…..

Installed on Linux through Vine and everything seems to work.

  9. Twinkletoe says:

I got in, Yay! It’s already very beautiful. However, when I got in the blue tunnel to the first next area, it crashed. I have tried to sign back in 4 times and it keeps telling me it can’t connect and to try later.

    • T'nara the Wise says:

Try waiting 5-10 seconds before running your client again. It appears Windows (I think) doesn’t release the Internet connection immediately. So, if you try to run the client again immediately, it tries to use the same resources and can’t connect. We’ll see if there’s anything we can do about that as soon as we get a chance.

      • Twinkletoe says:

Thanks. Yes, that worked. And I met a lot of people. We ran around with our hands on top of our heads, like bunny ears, lol. I am getting most of the movements except having some trouble with the mouse right click look around. It’s a little over-sensitive, I think. And I tend to get in a corner and have trouble finding my way out, but that will come with practice I am sure. Someone was zooming around really fast using his mouse, but I totally can not do that yet, haha. This is fun. Good job!

If anyone has issues with installing or logging in, we’d really appreciate it if you’d email us at service@magefaireonline.com.

If you have other bugs to report or features to request, please hold off until we get you into the alpha forums. You can see if it’s already been reported, or add a new thread there.

    Thanks!

Did freeze up going forward in Mushroom meadows near the zip line start.Other than this everything worked well.

  12. Crumpet says:

YEAH……its GREAT !!! LOVE the colors….and got all the keys to work correctly in moving as well as glided through all the door openings and jump section!! Soooo fun! got to talk to two other Madges and just loved the whole experience! MORE….grin.

  13. Adar says:

So, I got a username and password… but it doesn’t let me in anywhere. I click on the given link, sign in, and it ports me to the forums page and on the right hand side it says I need to sign in or create a new account. I can’t sign in – it says that there’s no account with that username and password. I can’t create a new account, because it says that account already exists.

And I don’t have access to the alpha forums.

  14. Emerald Fern says:

I can get on fine, after the jump when I start in the next area I get kicked off it says last server connection, that has happened 3 times which is how many times I have tried Maga Faire

  15. ShauntieFauna says:

Hi, I have played now for 2 days (not full days). A group of 4 of us practiced jumping around and exploring new “worlds”. Great colors. Loved the oak tree ride.

It would be nice to see the name of the particular world as it is entered. I am tired of making up my own names lol. Sometimes you have to chat and tell your friends where you are. All I know is mushroom meadow. But I am having fun.

  16. Emerald Fern says:

I just can’t not get very far after the jump I would say the first jump but it’s the only one I’ve had so far, anyway I get in that new area after the jump and I am told Maga Faire has quit working

  17. Kallie says:

I get the ‘mage faire has stopped working’ as soon as I try to open it. I’m sending an email to you now as well.

  18. mage1 says:

    Can not open anything.

  19. Solasaolablah says:

LOVED the colors, only saw a couple of people, everything works nicely, though i did have one weird log in experience before I tried it again. it worked fine the 3rd time. I really liked the leaves and the zip lines. over-all worked nicely (windows xp)

  20. Saraphim says:

I did the installation, tried to login and nothing happened.

  21. Adar says:

Still no access to the alpha forums. 🙁
